LIST OF ISSUES

Goals:

The goal of the Saudi Board of Family Medicine program is to produce fully competent family

physicians capable of providing high quality care to their patients and community. It offers broad-based

learning opportunities for medical graduates to equip them with the requisite knowledge, skills and

attitudes to function as family physicians in Saudi Arabia in order to provide comprehensive,

companionate and continuing health care that is accessible and appropriate to all individuals and their

families. It emphasizes lifelong continuing professional development to manage expanding knowledge,

an evolving specialty, and improving health care services.

 

Objectives:

1. To provide the graduate physician with the requisite skills, knowledge, and attitudes to:

Accept the responsibility to provide comprehensive health care to all the family members and

families within their practice, including concerns for their physical, emotional, social and

rehabilitative health care.

Provide responsible continuity of care to all the individuals and families within their practice.

Serve as physician of first contact to provide individuals and families with an entry into the

health care system.

Function as a family physician in ambulatory settings providing crisis, episodic and

comprehensive care to individuals and families.

Provide the patient with quality care, efficiently and effectively delivered through the use of

various innovative techniques.

Evaluate existing business and personnel practices in ambulatory care facilities in anticipation of

assuming managerial responsibilities of an office.

2. To train the resident to perform a history and physical examination, to develop a problem list,

assessment and plan, and to order and interpret appropriate studies for each patient.

3. To provide the resident with knowledge of the various methods of health care delivery and an

appreciation for how they may be used efficiently and effectively.

4. To provide the resident with motivation, knowledge, and experience in research methods to

further the development and improvement of the physician and the discipline of Family Medicine

To assist the resident in assessing the need for training, consultation and referral.

6. To develop in the resident self-directed learning habits in order to foster, lifelong interests and

motivation to continue his/her medical education.

7. To recognize the social, cultural and psychological factors which influence health and disease and to

apply principles of medical ethics.8. To train resident to be a health care educator and a quality improvement leader.

 

Scope of Training

Training is designed to:

Provide opportunities for the residents to learn in multiple settings (e.g., hospital, ambulatory

settings, emergency rooms, home and long-term care facilities).

Provide opportunities for skills and procedures that are within the scope of Family Medicine.

Prepare residents for self-directed and lifelong learning.
